Presbyterian Christian School
In 1975 the members of Bay St. Presbyterian Church had the idea for a new Christian school. In 1976 Bay St. Presbyterian Day School opened.[1] The school was originally located on the corner of 40th Avenue and Lincoln Road, but later the high school (known as Presbyterian Christian High School) moved to its current location on Bonhomie Road. In the fall of 2012 the elementary school moved to its new location next to the high school.[2]
2004 Justice Antonin Scalia Incident[edit]
On April 7, 2004, Justice Antonin Scalia made a half-hour long speech at the school's secondary campus. He made this speech in the school's auditorium and spoke on the Constitution to the children there.[3] While this occurred, a deputy marshal told two reporters for the Hattiesburg American that they had to erase all recordings of Scalia's remarks. Scalia had a policy that no reporters could ever record his public remarks, which the reporters had not been told before. The Hattiesburg American sued the agency and requested the investigation report under the Freedom of Information Act, but the Marshals' Service refused. [4] On April 9, Scalia confirmed in a public remark that he had written letters to the reporters, apologizing for the situation. This series of events made national headlines, appearing in Fox News and PBS Newshour articles.
