The "Screaming Eagle"

The Screaming Eagle is the name of a USM-themed black and gold colored Hattiesburg fire department engine. The engine was built by Pierce Manufacturing and bought by the city for a cost of $459,600. It was unveiled on March 30, 2021. The engine is based at Fire Station 6 near the campus of USM.

Name

The name was chosen after students across the city were encouraged to submit ideas. More than 170 names were submitted, which were then narrowed down to 10 finalists by a panel that included Toby Barker, Jeffrey George, and other representatives from USM and the Southern Miss Alumni Association. The final ten names were voted on by the firefighters at Fire Station 6. "Screaming Eagle", submitted by three boys attending Sacred Heart Catholic School, was chosen.[1][2]
