Hardy Street is a street running east-west through Hattiesburg.

Highway 98

Hardy Street is part of a much longer highway known as US 98. US Highway 98 is a primary east-west Federal United States highway that runs from Palm Beach, FL to near Washington, MS. It is also a Primary Hurricane Evacuation route.

History

In 1955, AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials), and the US Department of Transportation, extended US 98 into Mississippi from Florida. Much of the "new" Highway 98 in Mississippi came from an existing highway: Mississippi State Highway 24.

In Hattiesburg

From the 1950's until the mid 1980's, Highway 49 and Highway 98 ran concurrently from north of Camp Shelby to the intersection of Highway 49 and Hardy St., where Highway 98 continued westward. Today, this is designated as Mississippi Highway 198.

In the mid-1980's, a short connecting route was extended past the intersection at Highway 49, linking Highway 98 with I-59, bypassing the Highway 49/Hardy St. intersection.

Today, Highway 98 runs concurrent with I-59 from Exit 59 to the Hardy St. exit (Exit 65).
